When one enters Rosslyn Chapel from the west, that is, through the ‘carbuncle’ the first ceiling panel depicts numerous five pointed stars. This represents the Heavens and it is no mistake that the builder of the chapel placed this first. The first words in the Bible are: In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth – Genesis, Chapter 1, Verse 1. As Rosslyn Chapel is a Bible in stone so to must it follow the chronology of the Bible.

The small figure to the lower left of centre is an angel but more importantly above is the carving of a man with a beard and with hands upraised. On a recent visit to the chapel it was explained a ‘new’ interpretation of this panel was that the figure, with raised hands, was in fact a Masonic Master Mason! That someone at Rosslyn Chapel would suggest that the very first words of the Bible were not so portrayed in the first panel of the ceiling is, well…
