The meaning of the symbolism displayed here would have been easily understood by worshippers in the chapel 550+ years ago. The couple are shunning, or running away from, the devil. The Devil appears to have hold of the nearest figure’s clothing and the other seems to be escorting her away. In any event the message is clear do not be tempted by evil.

In common with other images of the Devil he is show with horns. It is easy to understand that some people have identified the other figure in the chapel which has horns as also being the Devil whereas in fact it is Moses. To go to that carving of the Horned Moses click here.
