Messenger Angel

This Angel is rather worn but it is clear that it is carrying a scroll, what Bishop Forbes describes as: 'A Cherub with a scroll waving from hand to hand' (An Account of the Chapel of Roslin - 1778) Such scrolls occasionally bore writing, typically a few important words addressed to those who could read. To those who could not read the meaning was intended to covey the fact that Angels were the messengers of G-d.
