The tower is all that remains of the collegiate church of Kilmun. However, as the tower was where the clergy lived it requires clarification in that the tower was attached to the church and in that sense was part of it but was not used for worship. The collegiate church was founded in 1442 by Sir Duncan Campbell of Lochawe for five chaplains one of whom was to be the Provost. A parochial chaplain was also to join the others in divine services.

Kilmun is unusual in that it provides some information of the living quarters of the clerics involved whereas in other places such as Rosslyn Chapel nothing now remains of their accommodation. The tower has four floors. The ground floor was used as a refectory and the middle two floors were the sleeping quarters and the upper floor was for the Provost.
