Haddington » Cornice

Another part of the cornice which runs along the roof line the aisles (to see where it is click here). The cornice is the whole ‘line’ and the individual elements are known as mouldings. This kind of cornice is common in the gothic Perpendicular Style of which St Mary’s is an early example. In this style the moulding of the cornice consist of floral motifs and animals, interspersed with space or hollows.

In the centre is a Green Man with exuberant foliage growing from each side of his mouth. To the right of the Green Man is a pig (one can just see its’ curly tail!). There is a closer view of the Green Man in the next image.
