Haddington » Cornice

This a detail of part of the cornice of the south nave wall at St Mary’s Collegiate Church, Haddington. As the Rosslyn Templars continue their research it is becoming increasingly clear that there is a ‘commonality’ in the carvings (and their stylistic development) as well as the underlying function and purpose of Collegiate Churches wherever they are located.

This ‘commonality’ can be seen in many of the Collegiate Churches in the general area of Rosslyn Chapel. Here we are concerned primarily with the similarities between the cornices’ at Rosslyn Chapel and elsewhere. We can seen that the general pattern is: a floral motif interspersed with an animal or human form (almost always a face).
