Haddington » Musket Holes?
In 1548 during the ‘Rough Wooing’ English forces garrisoned Haddington using it as a base to harrie the surrounding countryside. As St Mary’s was outside the town and if captured by the enemy cannon placed on the roof could easily fire into the garrison. St Mary’s was ordered to be destroyed. This marks are thought to be those of English musketeers who used the walls for target practice. The work of demolishing the church had begun when a French fleet arrived in the Firth of Forth and the English forces retreated leaving the church damaged but intact.
