Haddington » Defaced Angel

This carving of an angel, a corbel, has marked similarities with some of those at Rosslyn Chapel, Seton Collegiate Church and Melrose Abbey. It appears to be wearing a gown, or surplice, (typical in representations of angels of the period) and has a scroll in its’ hands. The scroll would, at one time had bourn a few meaningful words and the angel would have probably been painted just as some of those at Rosslyn Chapel have recently been restored.

Like the numerous angels at Rosslyn Chapel this angel and those in other ecclesiastic structures have no Masonic import.
