An active covenanter (163 8-40), Montrose later rallied to Charles I’s cause in the CIVIL WARS and led highland and Irish troops in the CIVIL WARS and led Highland and Irish troops in a series of spectacular victories before being defeated by David Leslie at Philliphaugh. After exile (1645-50) he returned to Scotland, but was defeated, betrayed and summarily executed.
