An active covenanter (1638-40), Montrose later rallied to Charles I’s cause in the civil wars and led highland and Irish troops in a series of spectacular victories (1644-5) before being defeated by David Leslie at Philliphaugh. After exile (1645-50) he returned to Scotland, but was defeated, betrayed and summarily executed.
