St Giles, Edinburgh - Interior » Green Man

Each time Saint Giles is visited new Green Men are discovered. It is odd that there are so many in such an important church. The number at Rosslyn Chapel could have been due to one man’s fancy but in a church used everyone (Rosslyn Chapel was for the use of the St Clair family) that cannot be the reason.

The Green Men in St Giles are all high up, on the capitals of columns and as corbels as shown here. Could it be that they survived the Reformation simply because they were inaccessible.

It may also be that there were many other Green Men at lower levels and because of their position were destroyed at the Reformation.

This particular Green Man is shown left is of the traditional type, that is with foliage sprouting (vigorously) from its mouth.
