Dirleton » Dirleton Parish Church - Archerfield Aisle

The Archerfield Aisle (or the Dirleton Aisle) was added to the church in 1650 and is one of the earliest known examples of neo-Classical design in Scotland. It was built over the grave of James Maxwell. The latter had been created the (first) Earl of Dirleton (1646) for services to the King Charles I of Great Britain (1625-1649. Born: 1600). He was a staunch supporter of the monarchy and died the year after his beloved King had died but did not live to see the deprecations visited on Scotland, in 1650, by Oliver Cromwell’s general, George Monck, 1st Duke of Albermarle, (1608-1670).

Sunday services are held at 11.45am and during July and August at 8 - 8.30.pm.
