Coldingham » Close-up of graveslab at Coldingham Parish Church

This close-up image is intended to show that there can be no doubt that this graveslab has the carving of a sword thereon.

This image shows that the sword is important, although not as important as the Calvary Cross. This is said with certainty as the sword is much smaller that the Calvary Cross suggesting the individual’s submission to the crucified Christ. The symbolism here is very plain and simple. the fact that there is no name also suggests the insignificance of the individual in the scheme of things.

The symbols on this graveslab are poorly, and superficially, carved suggesting that whoever made the graveslab was not a stonemason.
