Coldingham » Graveslab at Coldingham Parish Church
Although broken and covered in lichen someone has had the forethought to preserve these gravslabs, albeit in the form of a wall, in the graveyard which surrounds the church. These gravslabs are lined up to the right of the old arched entrance (a remainder of the old Priory) to the church precincts proper. These can be partly seen in a more general picture click here to go there.
Description: There are two lines around the outer edges of the slab which has the effect of creating a frame for what is inside. Inside that double border is a Calvary Cross with a two step base. This is unusual although not uncommon - see the gravslab to the right also with a two step base. To the right of the Calvary Cross is the outline of a sword and is very reminiscent of the graveslabs at Kilmartin often quoted as evidence for the existence of Knights Templar in Argyle (or Argyll) from 1307 - 1314. There is no other discernable decoration or inscription which means, according to some authors, this from the grave of an anonymous Knight Templar.
