Coldingham » Curious collection of stones

When one clears out a house, prior to flitting, a great deal of material is usually deemed to be worthless and is thrown away. This was equally true in past centuries when massive amounts of material were disposed of prior cleaning or building something new. Rubbish dumped during that process has proved to be manna to present day archaeologists. The picture above show what someone did with discarded assorted pieces of stone - he built a wall! Pieces of graveslab, legs from table tombs, quern stones etc. have all be married to create this curious collection of disused stones.
