Memorial Plaque (2)
This plaque is dedicated to the memory of Lady Helen Hall (1762 - 1837). The lettering is, we think, sufficiently clear to obviate the necessity of reproducing the words.
This lady was born on the same day as the late Brother Robert Burns (1759 - 1796), the National Bard of Scotland, albeit three year later. As a contemporary she would surely have knowledge of his life and work?
STOP PRESS:
This lady was the wife of: Sir James Hall of Dunglass (1761 - 1832). He was a Chemist and a Geologist and also served as President of the Royal Society. He knew James Hutton (1726 - 1797), acknowledged to be the founder of the science of Geology. Hall wrote several papers in support of Hutton's theory of the Earth.
Robert Burns had breakfast with Hall during what is known as his Border Tour in May 1787. He probably met Lady Hall at that time. Although Robert Burns was a Freemason it is not known if Sir James Hall was a member. |
