Dirleton Parish Church
Sir Thomas Erskine, a close friend and advisor of King James VI (King of Scotland, 1567-1625; of Great Britain 1603-1625. Born: 1566). Received the Barony of Dirleton for saving his King's life. He later was further rewarded by being created Earl of Kellie.
The Church of Scotland Parish Church at Dirleton was built in 1612 (at Erskine's behest) as a replacement for the 12th century Parish Kirk in Gullane because it was '... sa incommodiouslie situat beside the sea that the same, with the kirk yard thereof, is continewallie overblawn wi' sand'.
In 1836 the Tower was decorated with pinnacles in the Gothic style making this a most pleasing place in which to praise God.
Sunday services are held at 11.45am and 8 - 8.30pm during July and August. |
