Unfortunately little now remains of the Collegiate Church which was within the
boundaries of Dirleton Castle.
It is thought that Sir Walter Haliburton founded Dirleton Collegiate Church in
1444. This period marked an intense burst of building activity in the Lothians
as not only was Rosslyn Chapel begun in 1446 but Dunglass (1448) and Coldingham
(1450) just over the county boundary from East Lothian in Berwickshire.
Dirleton shares the same purpose as these other Scottish Collegiate Churches -
that of having prayers said in perpetuity for the soul of the founder, his
predecessors and his descendants.
