Dictionary
It was suggested to us that a dictionary of the more obscure words found on this website would be useful. However, we think that this would be to large a task to complete quickly so we shall add words as and when we can but it is likely that it will take some time before it becomes a useful tool for visitors. We shall start to make such words hyperlinks to this page. Once sufficient word definitions have been included in this page we shall probably have to create alphabetical page but this is likely to be some months, if not years, away.
The words and their definitions are whenever possible given their Scottish relevance.
Prebend Part of the revenue of a cathedral or collegiate church granted to a canon as a stipend. The portion of land or teind from which a prebend is drawn.
Prebendary Holder of a prebend, i.e., an honorary canon.
Provost The Minister of a Cathedral or Collegiate church. Also the head of a Burgh and in a large Burgh often known as the Lord Provost. Roughly equivalent to a Mayor or Lord Mayor in England.
Stushie An arguement.
Stramash A bigger argument than a stushie
Teind A tenth part. One tenth of the produce of a parish set aside for the maintenance of religion. After the Reformation this was appropriated by the Crown.
