Junction of Tower, Trancept and Nave
Dunglass Collegiate Church - the junction of the Tower
Here can be seen the problems experienced by the stonemasons who added the Tower to the existing structure. This junction is between the east side of the south Transept and the south side of the Nave. The different heights of the walls of these are clearly seen. The stonemasons had to build a small false 'wall' to assist in transferring the weight of the Tower onto the existing walls. They obviously realised that the result looked very clumsy and tried their best to disguise it using a few decorations. To see this junction in a more general view of the church click here.
The first decorated stone, which appears to be rather precariously balanced, may depict an angel or possibly armorial bearings but due to erosion it is difficult to be sure. Immediately below is another carving, also badly eroded, showing what may be two faces. Where the wall terminates is a stone carved with a floral motif. This is the best preserved carving as it is better protected from the elements. |
